Kamen Rider & ATA Child Safety Day

Last weekend, Bandai America Incorporated joined forces with ATA Martial Arts and Adness Entertainment to host a special Kamen Rider Child Safety Day. The action packed event at ATA Studios in Stevenson Ranch California drew over 65 kids and kicked off our “Join the Kamen Rider Revolution” Sweepstakes at ATA Martial Arts Schools nationwide where one lucky person can win the Grand Prize of training with Kamen Rider actors and Martial Arts Champions Mike Moh and Matt Mullins in Hollywood.

The unforgettable child safety event featured the Martial Arts skills of Mike Moh, star of hit TV show Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, combined with ATA’s Kidz ‘N Power curriculum, which educated children on ways to stay safe and fit. The first lesson was a simple break away self-defense instruction, then came role playing with possible stranger danger situations, and methods to deal with bullies alongside trained martial artists.

A second “action class” with Mike Moh, demonstrated theatrical stunts from the show. One of the bloggers that attended the event with her family grabbed some great footage of the action in her online video.

In between classes we raffled away exclusive Kamen Rider “action packs” including our Kamen Rider action figures and role play toys, a Kamen Rider backpack, hat and t-shirt. INCLUDE PHOTO ATTACHED Even the kids that didn’t win still got to play with the toys as we set up a fun toy table packed with lots of awesome Kamen Rider toys that everyone seemed to enjoy.

Even if you couldn’t attend the event in person you can also enter our sweepstakes online. In addition to the grand training day prize, theme park tickets and Kamen Rider toys are also up for grabs. No purchase necessary to enter and the promotion runs from November 7 through December 5, 2009 online at www.bandai.com/kamenrider. Many will enter, few will win.

Don’t forget to tune in to watch Kamen Rider Dragon Knight television show, which airs on The CW4Kids on Saturday mornings for more great martial arts.

You can watch scenes from the class and hear about 5 important child safety tips from Jason Morgan in our video from the event:

For those of you who haven’t been following MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” (ABDC) is in its third season of airing. The show has been slammed with applications and crews trying to prove to America that they truly deserve the title of being America’s Best dance crew. This season held a lot of great challenges that pushed each dance crew to become creative - think outside the box and even at points get familiar with styles of dance they were not necessarily the best at. Steve Terada, known for his extreme flips and creative forms capabilities has danced with several groups over the last couple of years. His creativity and capabilities from the martial arts have helped him to excel in yet another creative industry such as dance.

Vince Johnson's ill Reality Event March 20th

Those of you who attended our Feb Black Belt Testing witnessed an spectacular performance by our friend Mr. Vince Johnson & Tyger-B. Check out the Promo Clip from the IllReality event & performances

Philadelphia’s Own, illReality, Hosts a Launch Party and Concert Not to be Missed!

On Friday March 20th, come “Journey to the illSide” during illReality’s launch party at the Painted Bride Art Center. illReality brings together Philadelphia’s finest dj’s, dancers, visual artists, martial artists and regulars from the hottest club scenes to host one of the premiere arts and social events of 2009. “Journey to the ill Side” provides fun, entertainment, and adventure for all walks of life. Imagine a stew of Olde City’s “First Fridays,” “Mo’ Money No Problems” on Thursdays at Silk City or “Say Yes Sundays” at the Walnut Room served up by “America’s Best Dance Crew” and “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”…if you can’t, then you need to “Journey to the ill Side.” The evening will start with an art show and reception featuring the work of Adam Lovitz a.k.a. Thunk and party tunes provided by DJ Sammy Slice. The action will migrate to the theater for a spectacular live music and dance concert, featuring Sammy Slice with the Say Yes Band and the best dance and martial arts performers from across the nation, including illReality, RepStyles and Illadelph Phlave. The audience will dissolve onto the dance floor and we will finale with an audience-included jam and mingle session. “I want people to come out and have fun, experience phenomenal dancers and musicians that they can relate to—flirt, laugh, dance and have a genuine good time,” says illReality founder Vince Johnson.

“Journey to the illSide” is illReality’s first formal event. We honor a collection of contemporary North American social dance styles, including locking, popping, breaking, and house. These styles were created within the last forty years and pioneered in Black and Hispanic communities. Over time, they have become global dance forms, frequently portrayed in popular media. “Journey to the illSide” will allow audience members to engage with these styles up close and personal. The concert will highlight the conversational relationship between dancer and musician and dancer and dancer. The intimate staging will take the audience beyond the aesthetic and into the social nature of these dances.

"Leaders take action... Others just think about it"

As you know I'm in california with Sr. Master Dilegge, the time difference has caused me to miss the majority of the ufc fight this weekend and most of the super bowl as well. I received an awesome email this morning from Mr. Elder director of Victory School in Texas. I wanted to pass on his observations from an historic game. We can all learn from the events that took place regardless of if you are a nfl fan or even a rival team fan.

---
The pace was set in the Super bowl
last night when the Steeler QB,
Roethlisberger drove himself
20 yards to score the first
touchdown of the game.

First blood.

It's not his job to do that - Quarterbacks
are trained to plan and execute plays using
wit and skill, not brawn.

But after looking and finding no one to
throw to, he did what he had to do.

And set off a chain of events that eventually
brought his team to victory.

Another Steeler defied his job description, too.

When he found himself in his team's end zone
with the ball suddenly in his hands, instinct
took over.

And James Harrison ran it 100 yards for an
emotionally charged touchdown.

No celebrating at that time for him, though.

Indeed, he was flat on his back for a while,
gasping for air. Then spent the next fifteen
minutes breathing oxygen on the bench.

But with a smile on his face.

Mr. Harrison will truly go down in history
for that run but what most people don't know
is that he was cut three times by the Steelers
in his first two seasons.

And also let go by the Baltimore Ravens.

"I almost quit to become a bus driver,"
he reflected. "I was going to get a regular
job like everyone else."

Instead, he ran when he needed to and is now
a household name, at least among sports fans.

How many will be positively affected by
these performances?

I recently Read this article and wanted to pass it along to everyone. Our goal at ATA Maryland this year is to save someones life.... Now I know you may think we are talking about self defense. But most people need to defend themselves and their family from the attacker that waits for us in our own house: JUNK FOOD and obesity. As you read this article remember that we want help the entire family through our ATA FIT program or our recent partnership with www.1614fitness.com

Mr. Morgan
Chief Instructor

6 Steps to Kids Fitness
by Norine Dworkin

Thanks to a fast food/soda pop diet and the attractions of the TV, childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions.

"It's not unusual to see a 12-year-old weighing 250 pounds," says Christiane Wert, M.P.H., R.D., program director for KidShape, a Los Angeles weight management program for children.

Overweight kids are targets for other kids' barbs, which can leave emotional scars, but there are more immediate physical concerns -- high blood pressure, cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease. Excessive weight also exacerbates asthma, contributes to orthopedic problems like hip displacement and knee fractures, and may lead to early menstruation in pre-teen girls, a risk factor for breast cancer.

The problems are all preventable, Wert says, if children slim down by eating nutritious food and getting more physically active. It's not just a matter of cutting calories, which tends to deplete muscle mass along with fat; this kind of "dieting" not only weakens children, but ultimately slows down fat metabolism.

In contrast, exercise boosts metabolism on a 24-hour basis. When kids are regularly active, their bodies burn more calories even when they're sitting around watching Xena.

Here are some of Wert's ideas for enticing even the most sedentary kids to get physical:

* Make exercise fun. "Think of activities that kids enjoy and that they'll succeed at," advises Wert. "If you pick an activity that's too difficult for them to master, they'll feel like failures and won't want to keep doing it." Ice skating, inline skating, or skiing, for example, may be great for some, but too complex for others. Consider snowshoeing, a bike ride, a martial arts class, or even something as simple as a hike through the park or a brisk walk at your favorite shopping center. Better yet: Ask your kids what they might like to try.

* The family that plays together... Parents (and siblings) should get on board with the new exercise program. The more family members who get enthusiastically involved, the better. "If parents see exercise as a chore, kids will sense that and won't want to do it," notes Wert. Instead, form Team Family so that the child doesn't feel singled out or punished for being overweight. When was the last time you did something fun and active with your children?

* Reward effort. Set up a point system for exercise. For instance, keep track of everyone's exercise feats with a chart on the refrigerator. Don't make it a competition, but reward the whole group's accomplishment. When everyone has done three exercise activities a week, say, celebrate by doing something special

But never use high-calorie sweets or fatty foods as a reward, Wert cautions; it sends the wrong message. "Food is something to nourish the body, not a reward or punishment," she states firmly: "If at the end of a week of healthful eating, you reward your child with an ice cream sundae, it will seem more desirable than the healthful food. The child may become consumed thinking about it."

Instead of food, try tickets to a sporting event, the theater, a concert or the movies. Girls might like a massage or facial at a day spa. Or splurge on athletic equipment like skates, mountain bikes, a gym membership, even something as simple as a jump rope or wacky exercise video.

* Circuit-train at home. Who needs a fancy home gym when you've got stairs, living room furniture and canned goods? Using everyday items as exercise tools makes for creative fun. Wert suggests establishing workout stations throughout the house for specific exercises. Do as much as you can at one spot in two or three minutes, then move on to the next station.

Jog five or six times up and down the stairs in the allotted time, move on to crunches with your legs up on the couch, then hustle to the kitchen to curl two 10-oz. cans of tomatoes or water bottles. Finish the routine by jumping rope on the porch. Do the circuit several times. Make it more fun by blasting your kids' favorite music.

* Dance! Turn your living room into a disco. Pump up the volume, and shake it. Sure, it's high on the corniness meter, but it can also be a lot of goofy fun.

* Play schoolyard games. Tag, touch football and capture the flag are aerobic outdoor games that everyone can play. Invite other families on your block to join in, and it becomes a big social event -- not like exercise at all. When they're having fun, kids barely notice the huffing and puffing.

When the weather is nasty, a great indoor option is crab soccer. Get down crab-like, scuttling on your hands and feet to move a soft Nerf ball from one end of the family or rumpus room to the other. Just be sure to clear away anything breakable before you start.

As part of the safety campaign, ATA has partnered with AMBER Alert.com to increase AMBER Alert
notification via e-mail and personal communication devices. Once an AMBER Alert is issued, AMBER Alert.com uses state-of-the-art technology to notify its subscribers of a missing child in a specific area.

According to local ATA instructor Josh Hayhurst, education is the key to child
safety. “Children of all age, gender and race are vulnerable to child abduction. Through age appropriate instruction, awareness of warning signs and ID activities such as fingerprinting, collectively ATA schools around the world hope to have a significant impact on reducing the risk of child abduction and victimization”, says Hayhurst.

The local Child Safety Open House event, presents an abduction education program called “Kidz in Power” and will include activities such as simple break away self-defense instruction, role playing with possible stranger dangers, methods to deal with bullies and child ID cards and fingerprinting.
There will also be guests from local fire and police stations to share information regarding other types of safety concerns.

ATA Martial Arts offers a variety of programs focusing on safety, including ATA Tiny Tigers for children ages 4-6, Karate for Kids, and the newest program, ATA-Xtreme, which combines martial arts with gymnastics and dances moves.

Our Jr. Leaders Take Charge

I was contacted by one of our Leadership students this week about how we could help a family in need. Many families helped with our efforts to collect donation before the holidays. But as everyone knows many people are still in need of our help. I am proud to see our teenage and junior leadership students taking action on their own to continue to help the community. The letter below was received earlier this week.

Dear ATA Parents/Students,

As you know our Tae Kwon Do school has been involved in our community. And in our community there are a lot of families with lack of money. I attend Union United Methodist Church. There is a family at our church. It’s a family of three. A mother, a father, and a 7 year old daughter. They live in apartment. They barely have any food or money. There apartment isn’t big enough for them. They need money or something to help pay their rent or else they will b e evicted on January 20th. And the last thing that my church wants is for them to be on the streets. So I know that this is a short period of time, but I am asking for any kind of donations. Toys, food, and check donations would be GREAT! The checks could be made out to Union United Methodist Church. And put in the donation box. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Miss. Emily Cericole

Happy New Year

Goals for 2009
HAPPY NEW YEAR ATA Family! The new year is an exciting time because it symbolizes a fresh start and presents an opportunity to set goals for what we want to accomplish in the coming year . For the ATA and family, this year is even more important because it marks our school's 10th anniversary! That 10 years of setting goals, and achieving them. But we have a bigger role, as instructors we strive to help others achieve their goals as well.

So make sure to set your goals, write them down and tell your family and friends about them. Your instructors are here to help keep you motivated along the way. I sincerely hope that close to the top of your list is the goal to become more fit and encourage your friends and family to become more fit as well by joining you in the ATA classroom. Together , we can all be come more fit, ONE BLACK BELT AT A TIME!

-Mr Morgan, Chief Instructor
